Chapter 32

When Carl pulled up with the horse trailer, Natalie was the first one out the barn door, with Sarah right behind her and Jeff bringing up the rear. As soon as Carl had the truck parked and the ignition turned off, Natalie hurried to the back of the trailer and unlocked the latch.

Santos jumped out of the truck and scurried to help Natalie and Jeff unload Fury.

Carl strutted toward Sarah and, without saying a word, lowered her face to his and kissed her with a passion that truly shocked her. She returned his kiss, giving as much as he gave, sensing more in his uncharacteristic display of emotion than his kisses could tell her.

Natalie was oblivious to everything and everyone except Fury. She opened the door to the trailer and jumped inside before Santos had time to pull the ramp down. She whispered to the grey colt, and Fury dropped his head and began nuzzling her.

Grinning, Jeff shook his head and said, “She isn’t even that happy to see me after a week away.”

Santos smiled, but his eyes reflected sadness.

Jeff hopped into the trailer and unhooked the cross ties, so that he could back Fury out of the trailer. While he had confidence in the vets at the clinic in Laredo, he was eager to examine Fury’s foot himself, and also to get the x-rays to Leo for a second opinion.

When Fury stepped onto the ground, he pricked his ears at the sounds from inside the barn of Flight’s whinnying and pawing at the ground of her stall. He nickered back to his sister and would have bolted for the barn had Jeff not had a good hold on his halter.

Santos hooked the lead rope, and said, “I’ll take him in a couple of circles. See what you think.”

Jeff nodded, watching the colt walk. He could see a very slight hitch in the front, but was pleased Fury was using his leg without an obvious limp. “Thanks, Santos. His stall is ready. Would you take him in for me?”

“Sure,” Santos replied. He walked Fury through the barn to his stall and locked the latch. When he realized Sonny hadn’t followed, he went back to the truck and found Sonny was still sitting in the cab, his head in his hands. There were rumors on the backside that Sonny and Angie had something going, and his friend’s reaction confirmed them.

“Hey, Sonny.” Santos asked quietly, “Would it help to talk?”

Sonny shook his head and said, “I just can’t believe she’s gone.”

“Angie was a hell of a jockey,” Santos replied, “and I know from experience, she was one tough lady. Horse racing was her life. We will miss her.”

Sonny slid over to the door and shifted out of the truck. “I guess I better head on home.”

Santos nodded again. “I’ll fill Jeff in. I’m planning to stay at the barn overnight. If you decide not to ride in the morning, just call me. I’ll cover it.”

“Thanks, Santos. I’ll be okay in the morning.
